2005 Women’s Fund of Southern Alabama
Grant Recipient
Stephanie Hill is the recipient of the 2005 Women’s Fund $500 grant award. This award is designated to aid a female-headed household in her pursuit of higher education. Ms. Hill’s grant application was sponsored by the Mobile County Health Department’s Teen Center.
Stephanie is currently a Junior at the University of South Alabama with a 3.0 GPA. The award from the Women’s Fund will help her pay for books and car expenses getting to and from class. Stephanie also wants to apply to several nursing schools, but does not have the resources necessary to pay for the application process; each application costs between $30 and $50. She needs to apply to nursing programs in early 2005, so the timing of this grant award from the Women’s Fund is particularly important in helping Stephanie fulfill her goal of becoming a nurse. Some of the nursing programs Stephanie wants to apply to include the University of South Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Mobile. Her long-term professional goal is to be a nurse in a hospital perinatal care unit or gynecology, as well as pursue a master’s degree in nursing.
Stephanie is a 21 year-old single mother of three; she has two twin boys aged four, and a three year old son. She became a mother when she was 17 years old. She writes, “I want to be able to succeed so I will not be dependent on welfare and food stamps. I am working to have a good future for my children as well as myself.
